Is a new Walmart store opening in your neighborhood?
The answer is probably “yes,” and if you live in the greater Phoenix metro area, you’re probably not alone.
A new Walmart, located at 701 South Main Street, is expected to open in 2019, with plans to open the first store in the city in 2022, according to the Phoenix City Council.
But that doesn’t mean a Walmart is imminent, or even close to opening.
Instead, the Walmart store is part of a larger Walmart project that is currently under construction, according.
The Phoenix Walmart project will include approximately 4,000 retail and commercial spaces, according the City of Phoenix.
That includes a Walmarts in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, Glendale, Glendora, Pinal County, and Tempe, and a Walmart in Glendale.
Phoenix also has plans to develop another Walmart in the Phoenix suburbs of West Valley City, Tempe and Scottsville.
While the Walmart is expected be open by 2022, the council will have to approve its plans for the future.
For now, though, the city is looking forward to Walmart’s opening.
“This is one of the best investments we’ve ever made in our city,” Mayor Greg Stanton said.
“The Walmart will be a great economic engine, a tremendous opportunity for our people and our businesses, and we will be able to create hundreds of jobs here.”
The Walmart is not the only big-box retailer that will be opening in Phoenix in the coming years.
In 2016, Amazon announced it would open a new store in Tempe.
Other retail stores will also be opening.
In 2019, Sears will be moving its store from its current location at 607 South Main St. in Tempranillo to a new location on South Main.
And Walmart is already planning to open a second store in Phoenix.
But that won’t be the last big-name retailer to come to Phoenix.
Walmart will also open a retail store at the Scotts Valley Mall in 2017.
